Lyrics

Black Tea

(Polly Edwards)

I was visiting a friend in Toronto. We were in a croissant shop, and there were these two people sitting in the corner talking over a cup of tea. I didn't hear a single word of their conversation, but as soon as I saw them, their whole story leapt into my mind. It didn't take long to translate it into this song.

Clever Girls Music

Sitting in silence
Words are not needed here
You see what I see
I gaze at your shaking hands
Words are not heeded near
Half finished cups of black tea

Outside snow is falling
Feels like a song ago
There was a heaven in "free"
But inside the falling
Was finished with long ago
Now there's you, and here's me

And how can I tell you
In perfect grey letters
That last night I dreamt of you
Down by the waters
A tall ship came in
And a tall tale begins
And now I'm here
Drinking a moment in
A half finished cup of black tea
And your company

The actors of life go by
No backward glances
Time is too ruthless a friend
So why should it matter
If there's no more dances
In this all too bright, truthless end

Rich people windowshop
I try another mask
It ought to seem strange
If the poor and I only knew
How pointless it was
To ask beautiful statues for change

And how can I tell you
In perfect grey letters
That last night I cried for you
Down by the waters
An old ship came in
And an ancient tune begins
And I'm still here
Drinking a moment in
A half finished cup of black tea
And your company

Sitting in silence
Words are not needed
There's just enough room for me
And a half finished ending
To a half finished story
And just one more cup of black tea
In your company
